Title: Neurodiversity and the Importance of Honoring Identities in Clinical Settings
Description: During the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, internet use rapidly accelerated. This increase resulted in people learning more about themselves as well as having an increased awareness of mental health and substance abuse issues. For clinicians it can be difficult to keep up with the exchange of information that is often affirming to the client but may be different than what the clinician learned in school. The importance of lived experience will be highlighted throughout the program. This presentation will focus on the range of identities that have risen to the forefront of the client experience in an effort to help clinicians be affirming, which in turn helps the therapeutic process and treatment outcomes.
Objectives:
- Participants will be able to define neurodiversity and the importance of
honoring identities with attention focused on clinical settings including a focus on harm reduction and motivational interviewing with substance abuse clients. 9:00-10 am. 60 minutes. - Participants will be able to differentiate between gender and sexuality and the correlation LGBTQIA++ identities have with neurodivergence. Strategies for working with these populations will also be explored. 10am-11am. 60 minutes.
